Bhutan Visa

Travel Information

All visitors require a visa before travelling to Bhutan (except those from India, Bangladesh and the Maldives, for whom the relevant processes and fees are outlined separately below).

As part of the visa application process, you will be required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per day (per adult; concessionary rates apply for children).

A non-refundable, one-off visa application fee of US $40 is also payable.

Visa Issuance:

  • For air travelers: Your visa will be issued at the immigration desk at Paro Airport.
  • For travelers entering by road: The immigration office at the border town of Phuentsholing will stamp your visa in your passport. Note that entry from Gelephu or Samdrup Jongkhar is currently suspended.

The e-visa is approved and issued exclusively by the Department of Immigration in Thimphu, Bhutan. Your representative in Bhutan will handle the visa application process on your behalf. Once approved, the e-visa will be emailed to you. You must present this e-visa at the Drukair or Bhutan Airlines check-in counter when boarding your flight to Bhutan.

How to Obtain a Bhutan Visa for US Citizens and International Visitors:

Book Your Trip: Arrange your Bhutan trip with Celestial Travels.

Payment: Transfer the full payment for your tour to the tour operator’s account in Bhutan and provide a copy of the wire transfer receipt.

Required Documents and Details:

  • Scanned copy of the photo page of your passport
  • Travel insurance
  • Passport-size photo or headshot
  • Residential address
  • Occupation
  • Telephone number

Your Bhutan travel agency or tour operator will process the visa application, typically within 2-3 working days. Please ensure your total tour payment is transferred to avoid delays. Once the visa is approved, it will be sent to you electronically, allowing you to visit Bhutan.

Visitors from India, Bangladesh and the Maldives

  • India: Visitors require a permit. You can apply for this before traveling or have Celestial Travels apply on your behalf. No fees are payable in advance. Permits can also be obtained at the point of entry, but be aware of potential long waits depending on the number of applicants. If applying for a permit on arrival, you will need a passport-size photograph and insurance for the duration of your visit, which can be arranged beforehand or purchased upon arrival. The SDF is payable when applying for your permit.
  • Bangladesh and the Maldives: Visitors require a visa, with the process similar to that for Indian nationals. You may apply and pay the relevant SDF online and prearrange your travel insurance before traveling, or you can do this in person upon arrival. We recommend arranging your permit or visa in advance.
